Look, i never said that honda was all that great either for performance,
although the NSX is REALLY nice. They have the same problem, the stroke
lengths in their cars is very long. But also, they have no torque
either...look at the torque peaks for the type R cars and the new Si
civic coupe. 7000+ rpm torque peaks at maybe 120lbs? thats insane...
But my point is that because there isnt all that much efficiency in the
audi engines, especially the I5's, to get a decent amount of power, IE
say the IMSA engines, with 720hp, they needed to put in 3.0 bar of boost.
Look at Ned's engine, 3.0 bar of boost.
If i were to pour a ton of money into the I5, which i probably will in
the future, i would focus my entire project on increasing the efficiency
of the engine, bore it out a bit, maybe to 2.5 or maybe a bit more, keep
the cr around 7-8 and then run about 1.2-1.5 bar of boost. A friend of
mine is designing a 4ktq race car, with a 20v and this is what he is
doing. He wont even tell me what he is doing, its pretty top secret, but
i can tell you that when i do a 20v in my car, i will get his help.
Im not saying that audi engines are crap, in fact i love them, but at the
same time the 10v I5 has alot of problems that are limiting. For
example, the intake, exhaust, and turbo on the same side of the engine?
Jesus, talk about a heat sink for the intake charge. that is why the 20v
is so superior, with the cross flow head, it allows the turbo and exhaust
to be on one side and the intake to be on the other. That was a major
advance in the design and makes the engine much better. But one of my
biggest pet peeves about the engines, is that they have a cast iron
block. For the most part its ok, but it is horrible for heat transfer
capability and that is very limiting as far as obtaining the highest
possible horse power. An aluminum block is simply able to transmit that
heat much better and that in turn allows for more power potential.
Weight isnt even all THAT much different, maybe 100-200 lbs, but not HUGE
like some would think....
The head has many restrictions and the ports are SO small that they
really dont allow all that much air to flow by. Plus there is the whole
fact that the engine is hanging so far out in front of the front
wheels...we all know that is not all that great for handling neutrality.
I personally like the 20v engine alot, and do think it has alot of
potential, and i realize that there isnt really any way to fit a hugely
bored out engine lengthwise inline in the front of a car without going
crazy....
I was just originally expressing my dissapointment in the fact that audi
changed the S4 engine for more stroke, less boost, and higher static
CR...it just turns it more into a family car than a true sports car...
Thats all....
later...
