Auto trans rebuilders
In my professional experience, Aamco is the last place on earth I'd take
a transmission, or the sprockets on my 1 speed bicycle for that matter,
to be repaired. There may be a good one, or good ones, out there, but
not that I've heard of. I have used, and been generally pleased with,
"Carter's Gearbox Shop"' in Big Bear, CA, for about 10 years. (909)585
3031. The few problems I've had were quickly and inexpensively taken
care of. They even paid the labor to R&R a trans that had to go back,
paid the freight, did it over again, and replaced parts that weren't
done originally (on a judgment call) at no charge. In this day and age
where warranties are something to wriggle out of, that's refreshing.
They're really busy, BTW, and it may take a little longer than you'd
like, but their work is worth it.
In about 1990, we replaced, for the 2nd time, an automatic trans in a
FWD 5K, with a dealer reman unit. 6 mos warranty at that time. The diff
failed in 6 mos and 1 week. Despite the fact that the warranty period
was extended to 1 year less than a week after we purchased the trans,
and the job was not delivered to the customer by the changeover date,
Audi told the guy to take a hike. For $600 less than we paid the dealer
(wholesale), Carter's redid the trans and diff, gave us a 1 year
warranty, and it's gone well over 100K miles since that time.
