Did you check the resistance of the coil to distributor wire? It should
be something like 2k Ohms, but you'll want to check Bentley to make
sure. It is VERY common for the resistors in the ends to burn up causing
exactly the symptoms you describe. BTDT.
Dunno how similar the '88 is the '83...
On mine, the ECU (MAC02) drives both (as I recall) power and trigger
voltage to the ignition module. If the ECU is unhappy, it turns off
power to the ignition trigger module. Check if the ECU is even driving
the ignition ... (don't have pinout handy, probably wouldn't apply
to the '88 in any event).
