a/c wont quit - 88 80q

Coming back from getting my car emissioned inspected, I truned
on the a/c to make sure things are running ok.  Came on fine,
but when I tried to switch it off, it kept running.  I've got
the old style a/c controls, 3 rotary switches and two buttons,
one for a/c and the other for recirc.

Anyway, the red light in the a/c button goes off when you push
it off, but the a/c does'nt switch off.  I also hear intermittent clicking
coming from the relays under the dash, but not sure which ones.
The three that I can see are #272, #274 and #290.  Anyone know
what these guys are?  Can I pull a fuse to stop the a/c temporarily?
