Re: Codes for 3A engine
I own a 1988 Audi 80 with the same (3A) engine under the hood. The fuel
system is KE-Jetronic and has a limited amount of codes that can be
pulled. The codes need to be pulled from the fuel pump relay, but I
don't know them. Any Bosch authorized dealer could help you get the
codes, but it is very hard to get a code from the KE-Jetronic system
from my experience. I have had high idle and hard starting problems and
my fixes were:
1. hard starting - new time-thermo switch $36.00
2. high idle - turn the mixture down + check with CO gas analyzer + set
6 BDTC
3. high idle - new Idle Stabilizer Valve $250.00+
3. rough idle - new Air Potentiometer $350.00++
4. rough + wandering + high idle - new Oxygen sensor(heated type)
$125.00
Bingo almost all the problems gone, except a bouncing idle in
deceleration... can't get rid of it for the life of me. Check all the
voltages coming out of each part listed above and look for proper
output. Low or high voltage means probably needs to be replaced, but
each part has a personal voltage unique to it, so consult a Bosch
KE-Jetronic manual for proper voltages.
P.S. The 3A engine has a rough idle even with a stock camshaft, always
will and always has. The older the engine the rougher it gets in my
experience, but I have a 270 HOR Tech cam in the 80 now so the idle is
mildly rough because of that.
