I did remove the left side strut to check this and everything looked good 
(i.e., no wear spots, etc.) Upon assembly I really ranked on both struts to 
detect any movement and found none. They could still be doing what you 
suggest, but only replacement would tell, and I can't even extract the right 
one. Does anyone know of a source for the strut retaining top cap nut?
