'91 200QW sitting lower on one side.
Okay experts. A couple of weeks back, I replaced the rear strut assemblies
with '92 S4 struts. I first changed the left side, and then measured the
ride height in the back from left to right. Left side was about 1/2 higher
than right side. (Like an idiot, I didn't measure both sides with both OEM
struts installed). I figured that, once I installed the right side S4
strut, the ride height would even out. But it didn't. The right side is
roughly 1/2 lower than the left. I drove it around; no real change. THese
struts and shocks came off a low mileage car, and looked to be in pristine
condition. Bob Hoffman replaced the bumper stop on the left shock, and
said it was in good shape. He figured the right would be as well.
Then I jacked the car up, first on the left and then on the right, to
measure the distance from top to bottom spring perch when the springs are
extended. They are exactly the same.
Question: What might account for the height difference? Bob (at Precision
Motor Sport) says the shock shouldn't make any difference, except for when
it's brand new, perhaps. I'd be amazed if one of the springs is fagged
out. They are a matched set, and there's zero evidence of bending or
anything else out of the ordinary.
TIA.
