Well, among other things, it doesn't cost the government a dime(or
the taxpayers.) The USPS is entirely self-sufficient, which is
pretty impressive, and they actually turn a profit(which annoys some
people, since they raised the stamp again.)
Jokes about the USPS aside, they do something no one else can do at
the moment. I can pop something in the mail and it'll get to just
about anywhere in the NE within 2-3, maybe 4 days max. UPS or Fedex
would cost me many, many times that.
I've only had one problem with the USPS...they mangled my W-2 form
from an old employer. They put it into a special plastic bag that
contained all the pieces, and it arrived with a note basically
saying, "Sorry, yhea, we messed up, our machine munched it...this
only happens to X number of pieces of mail a year out of Y pieces of
mail total" Y was substantially bigger than X. I think the number
was somewhere around .01%.
BTW, US Postal Service employees actually have one of the lowest
workplace violence rates. It just that the USPS is one of the
biggest employers in the US, so it -seems- like "so many" of them are
"going postal"
When I was little, we used to have a driver who was a great guy...he
always refused to give the mail to me...he'd insist on putting it in
the box first and then letting me get it :)
We did notice one interesting phenomenon...some days we get only
class 2 mail...some days we get only class 1 mail, etc.
Anyways, we are sooooo off topic now :)
