I have had a similar problem with my '85 4000S Quattro on the
passengers side. After poking at the lock mechanism I discovered that
the pin the lock latches to (bolted to the lower B pillar) was worn.
In fact there is supposed to be a plastic collar on the post, and on
the passenger door it was worn completely away. I 'stole' one from the
rear driver's door (least used) and it fixed the hard to open problem.
I am still looking for a cheap source of the latch posts (as all of
the others are wearing close to needing replacement), so if anyone has
a source, please point me there.
