Starter run on

The starter on my 86 4KCSQ has now twice continued to run long after the key 
was released. Once it stopped by itself while I was preparing to remedy the 
situation and today it continued until I disconnected the battery. I also 
have noticed when turning the key - on a few occasions -  I get nothing, but 
then a retry works just fine.

Is my starter doomed?  Should I start practicing my push start technique?

Please provide any advice you can offer as to the mortality of my present 
starter, what the best thing to do/check next time the run on or no start 
condition occurs. Any other advice you see fit to offer short of suggesting a 
different marquee to drive.
