Sorry I'm entering the discussion late; I'm on the digest.
Anyway, just thought it might be interesting to you to know
that on my '86 5ktq, the heater stank really bad right
before it stopped working all together.  The A/C still
worked fine, but no heat after the stink went away.  I sold
the car as-is (traded at a dealer actually) so I will never
know exactly what was wrong, but it certainly led to the
failure of heating but not air conditioning.
