Well, I want to thank everyone for their suggestions.  I have done one
thing and noticed another which (for now) seems to have alleviated the
trouble.  I will monitor over the next couple of weeks to see how it goes:

1) The seal between the engine compartment and the hood which is on the
firewall was loose.  That is reseated.

2) The exhaust test port has lost its cap and was spewing raw exhaust over
the engine block.  A new cap has been put on and their seems to be less
odor.
