86 5kcst loses power and stalls

I hope someone can please help me with a problem I'm having with my '86
5kcst, 173Kmi.

Sometimes the car starts and idles normally, but when you try to drive
off, the car has no power and then begins to idle badly until it stalls,
after which it is a real chore to get the car running and back into the
garage.  The problem has been intermittent but is now occurring more
frequently.   When the car does run, it runs absolutely great, although
it has a rough idle at times.  When the car is not exhibiting the "no
power" problem, the rough idle does not otherwise affect the drivability
of the car.

I have replaced the idle stabilization controller with a used one and
cleaned the valve, and nothing changed.  I hooked a timing light up
while the car was idling badly and the pulses on all plugs looked
regular even though the idle was not.

At this point, I don't know if the problem is related to fuel, ignition
or some remote controller.  I'm hoping someone has had a similar problem
with one of these cars and can suggest what I might try next.
