I did my mounts that way recently, except it's much easier with
the coil-overs because the spring is fully uncompressed when the
wheel is unloaded. Compressing the shock into the wheel well
enough to remove the mount proved difficult, but I've got some
stiff Bilsteins in there, so others might be easier. I've never
removed the threaded cap, or the shock, but it seems like your
method should work.
