When I put the lowering springs in my '82 the old ones were fine.  I think
you can tell springs are bad if they sag.  I also suspect you should buy
some lowering springs, not cut yours down - the end loops are different
(flat to set in the seat).  And there's the old fashioned way - heat 'em up
til the car sags as much as you want... Don't!  only mentioned for folklore
value!
