SubWoofers, Bass
Here I go. Well, I think what Robert Houk said is pretty much a
pretty good summary of the True Sub in Technical Terms.
Now for the Audiphile Standpoint. Mine and others.
In Audiophile circles the True Sub is regarded as kind of a Bastard
Child of sorts. Some like it, MOST dont. I'm in the latter group.
For the average listener in a home theater it works fine. Its small and
makes a big Boom. But in reality when listening to it, it sounds Fat,
Flabby, and VERY Colored. (No, I'm not Racist. Thats an Audio Term
refering to how it colors the music instead of giving you the pure sound
you want). It goes low, and loud, but cant blend into any system I've
heard it in.
Minor quibble -- "Typical Sub", and I agree with the above. "Good" (by
which I mean "accurate" and "coherent" and "integrated") bass response
is a) very important, and b) very hard to achieve. Low C is 16Hz, and
a) very few instruments can generate it (a few BIG organs, Bosendorfer
Imperial Grand piano, and most artillery come to mind), and b) very
few speakers can reproduce it well -- the big ole Infinities and the
current Genesis line come to mind (and it is indeed interesting to point
out that the "flat-to-16Hz" Genesis 200 speakers use 8" woofers...*16*
of them!).
Audi content? Hmmm...that's a stretch, but hey, this group is obviously
about highly refined taste, n'est-ce pas? And my A4 is a natural 3Hz
subsubwoofer with only the sunroof or rear window open . . . but that
is a different thread.
