Stebro exhaust just installed; comments
For anyone considering an exhaust for a 4kq (or Ur-q), I just
had a Stebro stainless rear section installed on my 4kq. They
make both the front and back halves of a cat back system, but
I just bought the back and had the front resonator section
replaced by 2.5" alumanized pipe. Overall, I'm satisfied with
it, and it definitely flows better and will last forever.
The system is made for an '85-'84 4kq; mine is an '84, but I
have '86 bumpers so the cutout lines up with the tailpipes.
It sits kinda low, but it probably fits great on the right
year. I'll probably have the hanger on the muffler re-welded
to make it sit up higher.
As far as sound, it's definitely on the loud side, but it
idles mildly enough and what you hear is a nice aggressive
growl under accelleration; none of that annoying boy-racer
honda 4-cylinder huge-tailpipe buzzing noise. Definitely a
major improvement over the generic non-OEM-style setup the
previous owner had put in, which had developed some holes
and sounded nasty. I think I'll eventually have a glass
pack put into my front section to serve as a resonator and
quiet it down a bit, but no hurry.
Including labor and shipping, the whole thing cost around
$465 USD. Definitely a better value than any non-stainless
system you could buy. Meineke wanted $677 for an OEM-type
Bosal cat-back system, plus labor!
