Re: Odometer Stopped
Wayne, I still have a couple VDO odometer repair sets left over from the
80's. They include:
- Two steel shafts
- One pot metal odometer gear
- One nylon pinion gear
- One nylon ring gear
- One nylon take-off gear
Typically, the take off gear (straight tooth, runs off the pinion) cracks
and moves its way toward the end of the shaft. If you push it back on, it
will last for a few clicks until it: a) pushes back off or b) hits the gap
where the gear is cracked. I've seen it both ways. Now, I honestly have no
idea if these gear sets work for your '89, but I have used them to repair
'86s & 84's. If the connection is mechanical (via cable from the tranny) I
bet they would work. If I recall, an '86 turbo I owned used an electrical
sender from a hall generator--a totally different setup.
I'll sell the set for $20.

| I am sure this issue has been posted before but without the search engine
I
| couldn't research for myself. I have an '89 200 TQ with 139K miles. The
| odometer quit yesterday. I pulled the instrument cluster to investigate.
All
| the gears appeared to be free to turn. I cleaned all the contacts and
| reassembled everything. It worked once again for 2 tenths of a mile and
quit.
| Anyone know what goes bad and how to fix it? If not does anyone have a
spare
| to sell?
