Personally, I'd recommend 8x17s ... choose your offsets carefully and no 
bodywork is needed with 215/45-17 tires.

Or the smooth, groove-less lights and lock-less center panel from an '85 
through '87 4k or 4kq, with an internal trunk release switch like the S-cars 
have to compensate...

No more than an inch, as it screws up the OEM suspension geometry.

The only body mod that improves the car's look is to replace the grooved trim 
pieces at the base of the C-pillars with the smooth version from a V8, 
repainted to match.

Hey, this sounds exactly like *my* '89 200q ... no wonder I still love it 
after three years and 65k miles!  I even decided against replacing it with a 
cheap, medium-mileage '93 S4 when one came up for sale locally at $17,666 
recently ... no regrets at all.
