80 Brake Shims and other junk

I was working on the brakes on the 80 to cure th horrid screeeech they
made everytime I came to a stop. I noticed there were no shims, what
exactly does a shim look like and where how do they fit in? I lubed up
the backing of the pads, plus the backside of the rotor that is in contact
with the spindle only with some syn-grease. Seemed to cure everything
except for a mild squeak at higher speeds. I haven't had the money yet to
invest in a Bentley manual, so I'm flying blind here.
Second question, also noticed something odd today with the transmission.
I had the 80 in neutral (Automatic) and had the left front wheel off. I
started it up to angle the wheel so I could get at those caliper bolts at
a better angle, and the entire axle began to rotate in a forwards motion.
The car didn't move or run away (would have been a disaster) the axle just
spun, spinning the rotor around. I had seen this before when the car was
up on the rack at the mecahnics fixing a fuel leak, the mechanic started
it in neutral and the wheels continually moved forwards. If I hold the
axle it stops, then let go and it starts again. Doesn't happen when
started in Park though. Is that a sign of something gone odd in the
trany? Also those pesky CV joints are starting to make little clicking
noises (I mean faint noise), no more driving that car until it gets the
CV's lubed.
Anyone have an 80 wheel cover?

I have to thank those peoples at the first NH Tech Day for their help, I
am now finally getting into the swing of fixing small problems myself,
screw $72/Hour Bosch labor facilities for new brake pads and a 25 point
oil/lube change that costs $100! Thanks again, I got jack stands for
myself and soon to get a Bentley, hoorah!

Thanks,
