After coming back from 4 years in Germany (1993-1997), where they DON'T run
red lights and have surveillance cameras at stoplights, to Washington D.C.
(and northern VA/southern MD) where DO they run red lights without care, I
say bring on the cameras. The red light running has gotten out of control
and needs to be reined in NOW.
It's a safety issue. Good, disciplined drivers don't run red lights and put
other drivers and themselves at risk. Cameras are a cost-effective way to
catch folks who don't care about your safety or mine. I strongly dislike
speed limits on open stretches of highway, but I'm all for using cameras and
law enforcement to catch red light runners and drivers who speed in school
and construction zones. That's what they do in Europe and it works quite
well.
I'd like to hear more debate on this, although I'm sensitive to using up to
much bandwidth on a non-Audi subject.
