I would like to point out that the excellent AND affordable sintered
metallic drum brakes once built by GM for NASCAR fit very nicely inside the
13-inch!! wheels on my 2600 lb Corvair. The brakes never complained on the
track (although the engine routinely overheated). There was a lot more pad
surface than on my 90q. Braking was superb, as several higher class drivers
could attest. I think the putative improvement of disk brakes over drum
brakes considerably exceeds the actual improvement, for street use and
autocross, at least.
