clunking/groaning noise from steering linkage

Any help diagnosing clunking/groaning noises from the steering linkages,
behind the firewall?  The car hit a median divider a while back and had
repairs (driverside strut rods, new wheel etc.) and I am thinking that the
steering has been damaged somehow.  No leaks of fluid that I can see, no
loose bolts or broken sheet metal where the steering is mounted to the
body.  What else should I look for or test?
