Cat removal

Hi all,

Thanks for the info on theY2K problem, I need some advice on the removal of a cat on my wife's  1992 100 2.0E (engine code RT).

1.	What effect will this have on emissions, assuming I replace the cat with a piece of tube instead of a box?

2.	I live in the UK, and I believe that cat's weren't actually a legal requirement until sometime in 1992 does anyone know which month or able to offer any advice on the subject.

My reasons for removal are that the car being auto uses too much fuel and is too slow compared with our old 2.2 auto, other mods will be the removal of the warm air supply nonsense and a K & N to try and improve things.
