Pulling Codes

I thank Dan Sinclair for the proper instructions on how to pull codes for
KE-Jetronic cars.  Although on my 80 I never had noticed any Check Engine
light ever before, and I was right.  There is no Engine light, at least
that works, in my car.  I shined a Mag-Lite at full power at the light
cluster in the center of the dash and I saw all the templates for every
function possible, ABS light, Shift up light, none of these apply to my
car.. BUT the manual states that my 80 should have that Engine Check light
operating when the car starts, but it doesn't.  Hmm...  Anyone have an 80
4 cylinder model that is an '88 that has a functional Engine light?  Maybe
my bulb is out?  My mechanic and I have talked about pulling the codes
before and he said he had done it?  The engine light has never worked
since I got the car, I know that much.  How can I check to see if it
actually exists or if it doesn't apply to my car?
