This was the early 1980s - 50 Audi 80s, 30+ Passats. A bunch of lead-footed
computer engineers.
We discovered that maximum speed in the Passat (4+E gearing) was in
fourth - they would reach ca. 205kph indicated speed - a little over
125mph. Absolute maximum speed was obtained by backing off the throttle
a tiny bit. Frankfurt (Niederrad) -> Stuttgart (Zuffenhausen) in 1 hour
26 minutes. We ran them to 100km and then traded them in - none blew up
or started using oil, AFAIK. And I _was_ the car pool manager. Damn
reliable cars. I also had one Mercedes 500 flagship, two Golf GTIs,
one BMW 7nn, two BMW 520i, one BMW 323i. The BMWs gave me nothing but
trouble - bodywork on the 7nn, rear brakes on both 500s, and FIVE
replacement gearboxes in the 323i. We got to the point of writing
registered letters to the chairman of BMW about the 323i.
