I can't speak for the M3, but I've had an M-Roadster (same engine) and
basically it comes down to low end torque.  The M-Roadster has an amazing
amount of low end torque.  This coupled with the nice shifter and a smooth
redline really encourages you to use the entire power band.

It's really a very amazing engine, pulling strongly from only 1000 rpms.

What I've noticed about my Audi is that it really has little to no low end
torque (even with the AC turned off 8) ).  And that really hurts
performance when you're in the city.
