I, too am a BMW fanatic on the side.  My boss' 98 M3 sedan is hands down the 
most tractable performance car I've ever driven.  Nearly full power is 
available at less than 3000 rpm, and it's absolutely linear right up to 
redline-sewing machine smooth.  Also, the car's gears are notably closer than 
any Audi I've driven.  It is possible that the car you encountered was a new 
Dinan 3.  Dinan is to BMW owners what Intended Acceleration or TAP is to 
us-they sell supercharged M3s, with full warranties, right off the floors of 
selected dealers.  It's possible, but I doubt it.  Better luck next time!
