Code dump dismal failure

I made a VAG 1551 equivalent and attempted to use it on my V8 using the
instructions below.  Nothing happens.  The light doesn't flash at all.  I
was hoping that the instructions omitted that the ignition had to be on or
something, but no dice.  I'm using a spare brake light for my 4kq as the
light bulb.  The connectors on the floor could not be gotten to with
alligator clips; I used solid core copper wire and just shoved them into the
connectors.  I'm pretty sure they must be the right connectors, as they are
below the label "Diagnostic", and are numbered 1-4, pretty much as described
below.

Good things came of this.  While testing that my light bulb wasn't ruined by
soldering, I discovered a burned out taillight and replaced it.  I also
vacuumed under the carpet.  But my V8 still hesitates, (I assume I didn't
just fix it by vacuuming) and now what?  ;^(
