Your transmission is defaulting to limp home mode. Pull the codes and it
will tell you exactly what is defective in the transmission. From what
you describe the most probable cause is a bad solenoid in the valve body.
I changed the valve body on a friends V8Q a few years ago because of a
bad solenoid, it cost about $1100 if my memory serves me. The solenoids
look identical to ZF BMW solenoids, the major difference I noticed
between the BMW tranny and the Audi Tranny was that the harness had
different style connectors on it, so I don't think it's interchangeable.

If the dealer has already pulled the codes, ask them EXACTLY what the
code pulled was, as the dealer is not equiped to do anything on a V8
tranny except change it as a unit. The dealer is the LAST place you want
anyone touching a V8 tranny.

I changed the whole valve body because I hadn't yet found:

JAGGI IMPORT EXPORT, INC has what technically doesn't exist according to
Audi, mainly replacement parts for the V8Q transmission. Find a shop who
has experience with ZF transmissions (BMW) to do a correct diagnosis,
either by pulling the codes again, or using the ones you got from the
dealer.
