Don't know how similar the setup is, but on the '84 5KS I solved this
problem by adjusting the  cable on the programmer, the Bently has a step
by step on how to adjust the cable.  Also check the cable, it has a metal
sheath over the cable that is easily snapped if you force the cable into
unnatural positions when pulling the programmer.
