I'd add that testing the cap is (IME) invariably destructive - the
safety valve that's supposed to open at 1.4 bar and then close never
does so properly.
Also - check that the (large) grommet around the steering column where
it passes through the firewall is intact.
Another possibility is that the car has, at some time in the past, had
an interior fire. The plastics used in Audi dashes produce _EXTREMELY_
toxic chemicals when they burn. We had a heater fan resistor pack go up
in an Audi Coupe GT and the centre of the console melted - even
collecting the most trivial of personal belongings from the car
afterwards was torture - a couple of seconds' exposure produced a really
violent reaction. Check for signs of smoke damage in really
inaccessible places.
