I've noticed this, but only if I fill up near home and immediately park the
car in the garage.  If there is a few miles driving in between, there is no
smell.  My car has behaved this way for years.  I've assumed it is due to
gas being in the filler tube, but that is just a guess.  As for the filter,
I'm familiar with the canister filter underneath the car on the drivers side
just forward of the rear axle.  Is there another one that I've never replaced?
