Ouch
Well, the dash slam as a stopgap odometer repair technique is fine. However,
a slam (or series of slams) every hundred miles, at the rate I drive, has
become both painful and fatigueing.
Couldn't avoid my second (annual?) Audi odometer repair. Tried to learn from
the mistakes I made on the previous 4K. Namely, skewing the speed display by
not properly reinstalling the speedo needle. (not to mention the 20+
iterations before I really fixed it).
When I removed the needle properly, I found the tick mark other listers
referred to in previous posts. When I set the needle free, it pointed right
to the referenced tick mark. That's how I found it (quite a detective, eh?)
So now to the repair. The white gear on the left side was beginning to
shift. It was able to jump the worm gear with sufficient force applied. It
did not loose its grip of the shaft and no glue was required. I think that
is because i caught it immediately at the time of failure. The gear had a
very strong grip on the shaft and I believe I will get a lot of mileage out
of this easy repair. Glad I caught it so soon.
I hope that I reinstalled the speedo needle correctly, as it displayed dead
accurate MPH. Will have to test it at one of those NY radar actuated
roadside speed displays. There is one located close to home.
