Dash light works, check engine light too :-(

Hi all,

Some of you might remember me asking all sorts of questions about
inoperative dash lights on my '87 90q two months ago. Thanks to a couple of
listers more astute at reading electrical diagrams than me, we discovered
that there was actually power getting to the dash. Thanks to lister Kirby
Smith I'm now in the possession of a working US-model instrument panel,
into which I've swapped my instruments (the km/h speedo of course, plus the
temp and fuel gauges- I like the Euro models with the numbers on the
scale). I now have working dash lights again!

The problem is that the 'check engine' light, previously silent except on
startup, is blinking furiously whenever the engine is running... it seems
to be giving four flashes, then nothing, then four flashes again, etc.
There's no fuse in my fuel pump relay, which I thought was a condition for
reading fault codes.

Can anyone shed any light on this? The engine starts very well and runs
beautifully smooth. This blinking light wasn't on when I drove some 100
miles on Friday, nor when I moved the car to wash it yesterday.

TIA for your suggestions,

Tom
