The broken return spring Phil refers to is for the fresh air/recirc flap
below the glove box. The spring often breaks or comes off, leaving the
door in the recirc position, fogging the car up.

The spring won't affect the distribution flaps, but there's a vacuum
connection nearby that may be a problem. Check the vacuum piston for
that recirc flap. It may have broken off of its plastic bracket and come
disconnected from its vacuum hose. There is a beefed up, metal bracket
replacement; in the meantime, you can plug up that vacuum hose.

If that hose is disconnected, however, it would only cause problems when
it's getting vacuum--and that's only when the CC is working really hard
to cool the car. The problem is more likely to lie in the A/C
programmer. One of the vacuum solenoids on mine needed its wires
resoldered.
