Power Steering Problem - 92 100CSQW
My 92 100CSQW has developed an annoying noise and vibration problem with the
steering that I hope one of you has experienced before and can tell me what's
wrong. When the steering wheel is turned sharply in either direction such as
sitting in the driveway or pulling into a parking space, a loud vibratory
noise comes from the steering rack. It's like a dull, fast hydraulic hammer
sound that you can feel through the wheel. This happens only at idle. It
stops when I disconnect the servotronic module but then steering effort
increases and my wife is complaining. I'm suspecting something expensive
like a weak hydraulic pump or a bad servotronic solenoid on the rack. I've
changed the hydraulic fluid with synthetic Pentosin brand but that didn't
help. The car has 56,000 miles on it and is in now in great shape except for
this annoying problem. I also have a 94 100CS that I use as a baseline for
comparison on this car so I know this isn't normal.
BTW, I just finished replacing the heater blower motor in the 92 so if anyone
needs some info on that let me know. I got a fantastic price on the blower
motor from Rod at the Parts Connection and it was the exact same Bosch motor
that Audi put in the car. I'd recommend him to anyone looking for Audi parts.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Jim
