As others have suggested, I like the quattro list as it is. Right now, the
archives are very difficult to quickly and successfully search; that leads to
some frustration, and many of the same questions surfacing over and over.
Instead of more sublists, I'd like to see more web page archives directed to
specific marks and problems. Say this question is posted:
---
I'm confused about the audi coupe. What's the difference between the earlier
and later cars? Are they all turbo? always quattro? what's an urq? Help!
---
Response: The Urq is the original audi quattro coupe. Available in USA from
'82 to '85; other countries saw the urq until '91. The standard coupe of
that era is a front wheel drive, with many variations on engines, etc. The
later coupe quattro was available in the USA in '90 and '91, and was a
20-valve normally aspirated engine, see the 20-valve coupe and 90 pages, at
http://20v.org/ for further details on these cars. See the links page for
more info on the urq and early coupe, and how to convert your 20-valve coupe
into a turbocharged S2 coupe.
Provides a stand-alone answer; and shows a detailed reference which organizes
many common repair and upgrade questions. Also keeps down the frustration
level for new list members.
There are several of these sites started:
the V6 audis are at: http://www.12v.org
The S-cars are at http://www.audi-s-cars.com
I have the 20-v 200q at: http://members.aol.com/c1j1miller/index.html
The early coupe at: http://www.igdc.com/ejfluhr/audi/coupes.html and
http://www.nh.ultranet.com/~human/
maintenance and repair on almost all turbo audis at
http://www.sjmautotechnik.com
and many many others I cannot cite from what's readily available on my work
computer...
Most audis could be characterized as being evolutionary, rather than
revolutionary; there are running changes during model years; similar parts
and systems are used across several models; and changes to later cars can
often be retrofitted to earlier cars, or different models. This continues
(look at how many models use similar engine, drivetrains, chassis...).
One of the main reasons the sublists have been successful and continue is
that they include people with experience with other models. I've been
posting quite a bit lately on repairing the 4000 quattro; haven't owned one
of them in 2+ years. If I went off to a separate 200q20v list and dropped
the main list, you'd lose my experience(s) with past cars; and lose any
experience with similar repairs. For example, I'd hate to lose Igor Kessel's
experience with the type 44, now that he's graduated to S6 ownership...
I'd like to see some of the separate lists and web pages move back to the
main quattro-list fold; makes things more accessible, easier to
cross-reference, and adds to the sense of community. The comraderie is a
large reason I'm as involved as I am (I had a ball at Mt. Washington chatting
with my quattro list friends this weekend).
that's my thoughts and vote: maintain the integrity of the quattro list.
