1990 200tqw-AC-Outside temp is strange

On the way home today, the AUTO was on and volumes of air were coming
through the vents, but it never got cool like it did earlier in the day.
while I was sweltering on the way home I pushed the outside temp button and
it said -14F.  as I traveled on the outside temp got less negative, even to
zero.  I left the car for a while and when I started it up later, the
outside temp was -32.  It went up by a few degrees while I set there.  This
problem does not resemble closely those outlined in the step by step
diagnosis in the Bentley.  Can anyone provide insight into the source of my
problem.  Please reply directly.  I am a digester.
