RE: sub lists
John,
What is "_ltime_"?
You sound defeated, or at best resigned to languish in the status quo! Not
criticizing here, but what harm could an attempt at 'standardization' (I
really hate that word)make when it is not necessary for everyone to use it?
Imagine some twit asking about door handles after five other twits have
asked the same question five nights in a row? We've all witnessed it
happen, and in many cases we may have unknowingly done it ourselves because
we had a problem and asked before reviewing 168 posts!
A simple index would allow anybody to reply with the search string for the
particular problem, or better yet, anybody could pretty easily pick out one
of the correct search strings and get an answer. I was caught under the car
late the other night and had a question I needed a fast answer to a
question... ooops, I changed my outgoing mail server so the list bounced my
posts - figured that out the next day - however I proceeded to mangle a rear
bushing. Searching the archives could have helped get around the inability
to post but...
Nothing is impossible... Audi's making a 500bhp quattro beast!! We really
need a FAQ for this list - perhaps one that was sent (optionally) on
sign-up?
Later,
Peter

respectfully disagree. trying to get people to comply with a standard would
be
impossible, particularly trying to keep newbies updated etc. they have a
hard
enough time with 'bombs', 'UFO's and ETKA's.

the PROBLEM is (this is the more later part) that setting up something
better
and cool like that is a big job, especially with little to no clams, which
means
that you need _ltime_ and either capable cheapware/freeware, or to be handy
with
a UNIX text editor and development language (oh, and then lots more time).
Dan
has the whole Web site overhaul in the works, which is really when you want
to
implement a change like this. in the meantime, does anybody know anything
about
good free listserver search/archive software? in a quick scan of a Linux
list
or two turned up a few things, generally add-ins that sit on top of a
standard
listserver/majordomo. but real world experience using one is the key....
anybody?
