RE: Break dancing in the archives

First I want to see pictures of that!
I tend to get wordy and my thoughts, while making complete sense to me,
don't always click with others - no webform though - bite your tongue - just
a printable list of basic index reference numbers one can use to create the
##/###.... thingy.
I've had a couple of off-list discussions with others and there seems to be
some idea that Dan is not entirely open to accepting help at the front end.
That could make any efforts difficult if Dan doesn't have the time. I
certainly appreciate that the list is his baby and maybe another site can be
set-up and linked to handle some of the search functions / reference
material. I guess much like Chris Miller and Scott Mockrey have done.
The one problem we are faced with, besides the fact that search engines suck
in general, as you mentioned - I personally abhor any form of moderation or
protocol.
Yes my index is a form of protocol but look at it this way; if every lister
got in the habit of adding that index to the sig line, my post would already
contain a partial index;
Peter Berrevoets
1990 200TQ 10V
## / ## / #### / #### / 44 / MC / TI / Q
If I ask or answer a question all I do is modify the index as in:
Question about engine related problem (Main Group 01 - from ETKA)
Symptom is it won't start (making this up now but it would be on the main
index FAQ - NFGO)
So I modify the sig line like this
Peter Berrevoets
1990 200TQ 10V
01 / ## / #### / NFGO / 44 / MC / TI / Q
When the answer comes back - Phil ;-) simply changes the remaining blanks or
leaves it as is but erasing his own index line. This index has now got six
searchable fields with data.
This structure hasn't been developed any further than this, and it's only a
prototype it does seem to work rather simply in spite of it's apparent
complexity, all you'd have to do is keep a copy of the up to date printed
index definitions by your keyboard. I still rather like paper myself.
This is the part that needs developing and refining but it doesn't need to
be all that complex:
Group/SubGroup/Part-Component/Symptom/Symptom Modifier/type/type
modifier/type modifier/
## / ## / #### / #### / ## / ## / ## / #
Any ideas?

BS / ## / #### / #### / 44 / MC / TI / Q
(BS - shooting the s**t - no sgnificant problem being addressed - ignore
me;-)

Subject: Break dancing in the archives
For those that haven't explored the options available in terms of archives
and FAQ's, take a gander at this site for some reference:
http://www.scruz.net/~barneym/toy_root/techneek/top_neek.htm
As a audi mechanic, I find this site invaluable for keeping my trusty work
truck running.
Want to see what can be done with a list, take a thorough tour of:
http://www.off-road.com/4x4web/toyota/
All this can be done, on a "master list" or a "sublist". Take a gander at
the mitsu/talon site:
http://www.dsm.org/
Bottom Line: We can do better. My own opinion is that if just the first
site: Tricks, Tips and Techniques Threads was here, we could cut the daily
post volume by over half. The answer, IMO, does not have to be as
complicated as Peter B's proposal, sorry Peter, I'm still confused, you'd
need a long webform just to post, IMO. Your time is better spent figuring
an
audi TT&T.
Bottom Line 2: Search engines are only as good as the protocol used to
post,
or an ascribed moderator to "assign" the topic (the case in point at the
mitsu site). Right now there is none, not sure I'm fond of one. But hey,
you start looking at some of these other pages, you start to think change is
not such a bad thing. Does it need to start with sublists? Maybe, maybe
not. In the meantime, we lose time and exponentially increase the
complexity
of any decision by number alone. At least a sublist, puts content in a
place
that can be accessed by folks immediately.
Personally, I have tried to lean the tabogon many a time towards a change
for
the better in terms of search history. We are all losing out on good
information, Dan is losing both time and space, the cremudgeons get more
frustrated, the newbies frustrated and leave. Paraphrasing Batman... How
does the toyota list get all those wonderful and useful toys?
Carpe Diem has ruled this list for many years. It's time to put history in
perspective, somehow. I just don't buy into the magical search engine being
the answer. It's only as good as the moderation or protocol.
