Did you turn the brightness level all the way down?  :^)
Seriously, that pot could fail, or a ground, or a device called 
the "instrument cluster light booster" or some such. I poured 
over the wiring diagrams when I was trying to help Tom, and 
there were some strange circuits in there. Good luck.

Oh yeah, the fuses. Beware that they may be mislabeled on the 
box. I think #12 and #14 were relevant in this case.
