Does she depress the pedal _fully_ to the floor?
Does she pause for a second or two before shifting into the 2nd?
Try downshifting with double declutching. Did the grinding go away?
If yes - your 2nd gear synchroniser is on its way out. You now might be
confined to double declutching at all times. Which is not a bad thing
anyway.
