Heat always on

Help!

Although I live in the rainy Northwest (especially this summer!) having the
heat seemingly stuck on is no good.
I have a 1993 100CS Quattro and have the auto-heat control unit.  A few days
ago when the air conditioning was on I noticed a terrible screeching noise
that sounded like a fan clutch going out or something from inside my front
vents.  Ever since that day it seems as though my heat is stuck on.  I try
and turn it lower to get cooler and I seem to get the same steady temp.

Any ideas out there?
