They didn't.  Audi's procon 10 system wraps a tensioning cable around the rear
of the engine, and only activates in front-end collisions.  The engine moves
rearward, the belts clamp down.  This is the main reason that the '91 type 44
models received the lowest NHTSA HIC (head injury count) number of all time back
then.
