Re: Tips on removing type 44 alternator?
Hi Gary;
That rear bolt is definitely a PITA. I access it using a 3/8" drive
ratchet and a 17 mm regular socket. I work the ratchet up from the bottom
beside/behind the alternator. If I recall correctly, I put the socket on
the bolt and slide the ratchet up through the packed mess of equipment down
there. Sorry I can't be more specific; I'd have to be laying under the car
looking at it to give you a good description. It usually takes me 5 minutes
to figure out how to access it; the knowledge that I've done it before
encourages persistence! I loosen this bolt every time I tension the
alternator belt. As I recall, it is easier to get to if you remove the
plastic cover on the back of the alternator - when I'm tensioning the belt I
just leave the cover on and "bless" the Audi engineers under my breath.
BTW, my '91 200q has the 10V engine, so the alternator layout is the
same as yours.
