I saw undamped gauges on type-44 (at the Glen, Lime Rock) cut directly
into the intake manifold.
The result was a jumpy, vibrating needle. That's with a relatively large
2.2L 5 cylinder with 10 fixed valves locked at a constant phase of
intake induction.

The VDO (150 061, -30"Hg to +15psi) on my wife's A4 is also connected to
the manifold directly but is very smooth yet instanteneously responsive.
That's on a little 1.8L, with 5 valves with RPM-dependent phase of
intake induction when one would expect creating a resonating standing
wave of air at a certain engine speed which would be causing a trombone
effect.

I will be mounting the VDO (150 121, "Vision" series, -30"Hg to +25psi)
in my S6 shortly. A detailed report on auxiliary instrumentation (Lambda
gauge, Voltmeter, Oil Pressure gauge) will follow.
