Hello Jim and welcome aboard!
Since it's intro, the 1.8T A4 's have been by far the best Audi deal ($),
especially if you like to or may plan to modify the engine (ECU chips, etc)
later on.
IMHO, the A4 1.8T (or 2.8) with MT is much more fun to drive than any A6
(the $ factor too), but to be fair, my 85 5KS with auto was also fun to
drive when it was brand new.
What is best for you? Test drive them both and see.
You will enjoy whatever Audi you choose.
