Speedometer works... how come my odometer doesn't?

...  For some reason on my 85 4kq the speedometer still works but the odometer doesn't.. .any ideas?    I took the unit out yesterday to make sure everything was plugged in alright.. . and everything is..   except the plastic piece that keeps the speed O cable connected to the back of the instrument panel is broke..

85 4kq w/odometer that has stopped at 75,099 miles.   What have I done to the Audi gods now to deserve this?
