Lower heater water pipe fabrication Type 44

Is there any reason why I shouldn't use copper tubing to fabricate a
replacement for the lower water heater hose? Part #034 121 071 K
It's around $120CDN and mine is corroded to the point where I think it may
fail at an inopportune moment.  I was thinking of fabricating this part out
of some household copper pipe and a "T" fitting.  I think it should work,
but before I get into it does anyone know a good reason not to? Any BTDT?
